My views on Ethnicity

The term ethnicity may be defined as “identity with or membership in a particular racial, national, or cultural group and observance of that group's customs, beliefs, and language”.

Examples of ethnic groups are:

  • Tamil speaking population in Sri Lanka
  • Aborigines of America, usually called Red Indians
  • Dravidians and Aryans in ancient India

Ethnicity is a term that refers to the history and should, in fact, have nothing to do with the present-day.  However, ethnic clashes is not uncommon in this world.  People fight with each other in the name of ethnicity.  This division among people serves no purpose other than providing room for hatred and violence.

  • Ethnocentrism is the feeling that your own group's cultural traditions and values are correct and superior to all others.  This is usually coupled with a generalized dislike and even contempt for people who have other cultural traditions. Ethnocentrism is universal in that all people around the world are ethnocentric to some degree.
